ENDODONTICS (ROOT CANAL TREATMENT)

ENDODONTICS (ROOT CANAL TREATMENT)
What is a root canal treatment?

Our teeth are naturally inhabited by nerve tissue and blood vessels which we call dental pulp. When the infection caused by dental caries or any trauma reaches the pulp you may feel a varying amount of pain or sensitivity. In root canal treatment we eliminate the infected tissue, clean and disinfect the tooth then fill the root canals with an inert filling.

When do you need a root canal treatment?

In such cases like advanced tooth decay where the inflammation gets to the nerves, traumas where the tooth loses its liveliness, advanced gum diseases and irreversible sensitivity issues etc. we offer you the root canal treatment to save the tooth from extraction in the future.

How the process goes?

First of all, despite the popular belief root canal treatment is not a painful process. As a first step, our dentists apply anaesthesia to your tooth to numb it so you won’t feel any kind of pain during the treatment. After we numb the painful area, the decay and infected parts will be removed, the root canals will be cleaned with special disinfectant solutions and filled with root canal fillings. The rest of the tooth will be restored with white aesthetic fillings or aesthetic crowns depending on your need.

How long does it take?

Sessions will vary depending on your personal need but mostly the complete treatment takes place in 1 or 2 sessions with each approximately 40-60 mins. If it’s a 2 visit treatment, a medical dressing may be applied between the visits according to your tooth’s need.

Will I have pain afterwards?

In normal conditions you would not feel pain after the treatment, however, there might be a little discomfort on the following days especially while chewing. This is completely normal as it takes different times for different tissues to heal. For example, if there was an advanced infection where the surrounding tissue was affected, it will take more time for that to heal.

Do I need to use antibiotics?

Normally root canal treatments do not require any medications. But after a detailed inspection, if there are any advanced infections or swelling that wouldn’t be cured by root canal treatment your doctor may prescribe you an antibiotic as part of a treatment plan.

Do I need to get a crown or a filling afterwards?

Most of the teeth which need a root canal treatment are fractured or broken because of the remaining tooth decay. After cleaning the infected tissue our dentists will examine the condition of the remaining tooth structure. If there is enough tissue that can be covered by a filling then it can be restored with aesthetic fillings. Otherwise, we recommend an aesthetic crown to support the tooth and protect it.
